For this purpose, the flat material is pressed\u00a0<strong>between<\/strong>\u00a02 tools, namely the\u00a0<strong>embossing die and the counter die<\/strong>, and thus deformed. The embossing is then visible on both sides of the paper.<\/p><h3>Types of 3D embossing<\/h3><p>The nature of the tools determines the result:<\/p><ul class=\"list-normal\"><li>If the image is raised, it is called\u00a0<strong>embossing<\/strong><\/li><li>If the image is recessed, it is called\u00a0<strong>de<\/strong>bossing<\/li><li>A\u00a0<strong>single-level emb<\/strong>ossing has one raised or recessed plane.<\/li><li>A\u00a0<strong>multi-level emb<\/strong>ossing has two or more levels parallel to the paper surface.<\/li><li><strong>Sculptured 3D relief emb<\/strong>ossing, on the other hand, features three-dimensional gradients and body shapes, such as a face or statue.<\/li><\/ul><p>A more historical term for 3D embossing is &#8220;<strong>blind embossing<\/strong>.&#8221; The name suggests positioning in an unprinted area of the paper. However, the term lacks a more precise definition, such as whether raised or recessed is desired.<\/p><h3>Optical enhancement of 3D embossing<\/h3><p>Additional\u00a0<strong>light reflection greatly enhances<\/strong>\u00a0the optical effect of an embossing. There are two possibilities for this:<\/p><ol><li><strong>Metallization of the embossing\u00a0<\/strong>image with an extremely thin layer of reflective metal, a so-called foil relief embossing.<\/li><li><strong>High-gloss UV varnishing of the embossing<\/strong>\u00a0image, a so-called varnish embossing or varnish debossing.<\/li><\/ol><h3>Sizes and thicknesses for 3D embossing<\/h3><p>We can\u00a0<strong>emboss business card size up to a sheet size of 720&#215;1,020mm<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Paper and carton can be\u00a0<strong>embossed well up to around 450g\/m\u00b2.<\/strong>\u00a0With thick grey cardboard and chipboard, the material is often too thick for deformation. Here, however, it is usually possible to press in a well palpable indentation.<\/p><p>Thin papers, on the other hand, often have too little body for an effective result. Here, it is better to work with thick-layer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.simsa.at\/en\/special-effects\/lacquer-effects\">relief varnish<\/a>\u00a0instead of embossing.<\/p><h3>Tricks and tips for 3D embossing<\/h3><p>Although embossing sounds very simple at first glance, there are a few points that are crucial to success as early as the conception phase.
